So you're probably wondering - how does this Academy thing work without becoming a Dawson's Creek in Space?

1) Don't ever compare the game to Dawson's Creek in Space in front of the GM. She'll hit you. ;)

Intro:

The game is based on the premise of students and instructors studying and working at a training facility that educates and instructs students in the ways of the Stargate universe. They are specifically trained to be active, useful participants in the Stargate program. The Academy is not specifically military or civilian, but a combination of all that the Stargate program needs. It is based in the future, which gives some leeway as to how far the universe can be stretched to suit storylines.

Characters:

Players can take on the role of either a student or instructor. The roles of instructors are limited and will be allowed sparingly. Students, however, are the mainstream of the game and can be from any country on Earth or even (in some special cases) from one of Earth's allied planets.

* Instructors can be of any age.
* Students are generally of ages between 17 and 28 (as young as 16 and as old as 30 in some special cases).

Instructors are characters who have extensive training and qualifications in a particular area. They may be either civilian or military (either enlisted or officer) and can be of any age.

Students are characters who have come to the Academy to get their training. They may be fresh out of high school or have decided to change jobs from either the military or civilian arenas. Or they may be transferring from a university, military academy or from active military service (either they resign or are given an exemption to be removed from active duty to study at the Stargate Academy). For the sake of fairness among students, current military ranks aren't recognised.

Courses:

Students select a track to specialise in and take classes focused on that, as well as general Academy-wide courses on the basics of being a member of the SGC. (See the Courses section for more detail)

During normal Academy-based time, students are all equal FIRST YEAR students. This is their first time here, so that everything is new.

However, in the field, there will naturally be a chain of command.

Field Activity:

Now, the game is not all about studying hard and attending classes. That would make for tedious and boring times. That is why at least 50% of the Academy's course credit is focused on field work.

Students are assigned to field squads of at least 4 people. These squads go on various recon, diplomatic and search and rescue missions, just like regular SG teams, depending on the demand for personnel at the time.

Command, Combat and Flight students will automatically be given the equivalent of military ranks (from their home country) for field missions (these have no bearing when back at the Academy). The other areas will have the option of taking on a military rank or staying civilian.

Objective:

But the game isn't just about off-world action. Back at the Academy, there's things to do and people to interact with. The game is about character development, pushing the envelope in the Stargate universe and above all else - having fun!
