Background / Personal
Background: Kaitlin Louise O'Connell was born in Brisbane, Australia. As a child, she was considered bright and relatively friendly, if not a bit shy and reclusive. Her attentions were wide-spread over the academic, sporting and extra-curricular arenas. She excelled in most things she did, especially academics and seemed to be set to continue the trend into senior and tertiary education. However, in her mid-teens, her attitude changed and so did her priorities. Her academics slipped, as did her interest in a number of her extra-curricular and sporting activities. She was, however, happy that way. Most of her family and former friends (who lost interest once they lost constant contact with Kaitlin) didn't understand the seemingly sudden change (which had actually occurred slowly, they just hadn't noticed) in Kaitlin and therefore, she felt somewhat detached from everything and everyone she had once known.

However, after completing high school and achieving grades that were nothing to be ashamed of, she made the decision to move across the world and study in the United Kingdom. O'Connell had no idea where she was going in life career-wise, just that she wanted to explore different avenues and attempt to experience as many things as possible without having to have any responsibility that she couldn't discard at will. She did have a few relationships, one that was seemingly serious, but after her course she was approached by the Australian military. Apparently, they were looking for new officers to specialise in personnel management and command training (ie: they were looking for new leaders as the old group were retiring). Kaitlin decided to take up the offer and return home to Australia. The relationship she was in was ended after a mutual decision and the two still remain friends.

Once she returned to Australia, she underwent extensive military training and continued the karate training that she had taken up in the UK. As a test of her skills, she was assigned to be part of the Australian peacekeeping force in East Timor, eventually gaining command of a small group there. She impressed her superiors and, after a stint teaching the command theory she had specialised in, was offered the opportunity to put those theories into practice.

As part of an experimental international program, she was placed amongst small international units to take care of skirmishes that, in the best interests of the countries involved, were to remain quiet or, if possible, silent. The experiment was mostly a success and Kaitlin managed to gain quite a lot of experience and accolades from numerous foreign military forces. Her name was put forward in recommendation by several nations for the Command Instructor's position at Stargate Academy and approved, so she was reassigned there.

 
Psychological Profile: Kaitlin is in it for the experience, no matter what she does. She's happy when she's learning something new, no matter how insignificant and whether it's from reading a book, hearing it from someone else or experiencing it herself. She has a professional appearance that she uses when necessary, however she is quite laid back. While she seems to be headstrong and stubborn, as well as bold and determined, there is also a lot of self-doubt beneath the surface that she doesn't always like to show. Her stubborn streak can be her downfall sometimes, but it also helps her through things. She's intelligent and is able to quickly pick up skills after a few attempts. O'Connell is generally friendly and happy, however she is fiercely loyal to her friends (and can be quite vicious to those who try to hurt them) and can be strict when she needs to be. Mood swings sometimes come into effect and can be extreme.

Leadership comes naturally to her, but she doesn't go looking for it. She's also quite modest and has difficulty accepting compliments. She has a rebellious streak at times and has an uncanny way of getting what she wants. Kaitlin has a need for adventure and craves new experiences - whether that be with events or people. However, once she gets something she is comfortable, she doesn't like changes that she isn't in control of. She has a knack for observing and picking up on nuances and strange details. She does have a caring side, but tends to resort to her facade of indifference or detachment when she gets too close, for the simple fact that she's afraid of getting hurt. She does sometimes have difficulty grasping reality, but she knows it and that seems to benefit her because it allows her to look outside the set parameters, make her own parameters and go that extra bit further to achieve her goal.
