Born in Squamish - a small skiing resort in the winter north of Vancouver, BC. Youngest son of Margaret and Daniel Mackenzie. His older brother and sister both followed in their father's footsteps and entered into the realm of medicine - his brother (Adam) to become a surgeon and his sister (Melanie) into the world of animal welfare. It was always assumed Jake would also opt for this type of career and it came as something of a shock to his family when he passed the many opportunities by to become a linguist. Not only that, but he chose to do so in the Canadian Armed Forces... namely in the Aviation sector.

His childhood was erratic as his career-driven parents strove to succeed in their own fields, leaving Jake to effectively rear himself from a relatively young age. This led to the independent streak that runs through him now.

He left Squamish to enter college in Toronto, moving soon after to Quebec and it was several years later that he eventually returned home, fully qualified and with a commission in the Canadian Air Force. There followed a period of five years during which the young man moved from one base to another throughout both Canada and the United States before he finally caught the attention of a high-ranking officer within the Stargate Project. He was soon enlisted and the next six years were spent at the base in Colorado Springs serving on SG12. He moved swiftly up the ranks and his arrival at the Academy saw him as a young Lieutenant Colonel... at almost an unprecedented age.
